A Word of Hope

19 January • Why Don’t We Fast All the Time? | New Wine in Old Wineskins Explained

Remote video URL

"Only a heretic fasts on a feast day." This 17th-century Bohemian saying gets to the heart of today's Gospel reading. In this episode of A Word of Hope, Brother Edward joins us from St. Vincent Ferrer Priory to explore why Jesus' disciples didn't fast like the Pharisees or the followers of John the Baptist.

Reflecting on the Gospel of Mark, Brother Edward explains the image of the Bridegroom. When Christ is present, it is a time for celebration, not mourning! Jesus isn't telling us to forget the traditions of the past, but He is inviting us to see them through new eyes—like putting new wine into new wineskins.

Join us to learn how the transformative nature of Christ changes how we view religious rules, fasting, and our relationship with the living God.

In this video, you will learn:
The difference between the disciples of John the Baptist and Jesus.
The meaning of the "New Wine, Old Wineskins" parable.
Why Christianity is about transformation, not just observation.
