Wheat and Weeds: Jesus' Parable for Our Personal and Political Lives | 16th Sunday in Ordinary Times

Remote video URL

In this Know Before You Go reflection for the 16th Sunday in Ordinary Time, Father Charlie Bouchard, OP explores why Jesus teaches in parables instead of just presenting facts. Using the Parable of the Wheat and Weeds, Fr. Charlie shows how Jesus invites us into deeper participation in his mission—calling us to discern good from evil in our personal spiritual lives AND in our political choices. As we approach election season, discover how to carefully distinguish the wheat from the weeds in candidates and platforms, while avoiding self-deception in our own hearts.

🙏 Key Message: "We are invited into these mysteries—the mystery of salvation, the mystery of goodness and evil in our lives. We are given an invitation, and the Lord asks us to come into it, and to allow ourselves to be changed by it. It's not just a question of hearing facts and believing them or not believing. It's a question of becoming true to this gospel, and being able to discern where in our lives, and where in our society we find goodness, and where we find sin and deception."

🌾 The Parable Applied: Personal Life:

  • Cultivating virtues vs. sinful weeds
  • Going to confession to root out sin
  • Avoiding self-deception
  • Discerning our true motives

Political Life:

  • Examining candidates and platforms
  • Distinguishing wheat from weeds in policies
  • Entering into complexity rather than simplistic choices
  • Being vigilant and prayerful in civic participation
