What difference do our prayers for the dead make? On All Souls Day, the Catholic Church pauses to pray for those who have gone before us — but why would our prayers matter to them?
In this episode of A Word of Hope, we reflect on the beautiful intuition behind praying for the dead: we love them. We also go deeper into the Church's teaching that those who have died may still be undergoing purification on their way into the glory of heaven — and why our prayers, our forgiveness, and our desire for their peace genuinely matter.
Drawing on the Collect from All Saints Day, which asks for "an abundance of reconciliation," this reflection explores the unity we long for as one Body in Christ: a unity that sin disrupts in this life, but that Christ is restoring for all eternity.
