Father Charlie Bouchard offers A Word of Hope, a few thoughts on the readings for Friday, October 16.
In today's Gospel, Jesus tells us that nothing is concealed that will not be revealed, and there is no secret that will not be known. At first hearing, that can sound disturbing, even scary. None of us would be eager to have everything we've ever thought or tried to keep hidden made public. Politicians learn that the hard way when their past is shouted from the housetops of cable news.
It would be easy to imagine God as a kind of cosmic tattletale, waiting to trip us up, embarrass us, or punish us. But Father Charlie suggests that's not the point at all. Jesus is calling us to cultivate transparency: to be exactly who God intends us to be, to be honest about our mistakes and failures, and to trust that the Lord keeps leading us toward greater perfection.
This matters all the more in what has been called a post-truth society. Lies and half-truths are no basis for the spiritual life, or for the trust we need to live together as humans, let alone as children of God. When we push away the artifice and half-truths, we make room for the power of the Spirit, and the more honestly we can say who we are, the more God's grace is able to perfect it.
In this reflection:
• Why "nothing is concealed" can feel frightening
• The "cosmic tattletale" misunderstanding of God
• Transparency as the heart of the spiritual life
• Honesty and trust in a post-truth society
• How openness makes room for the Spirit's power
