On the Memorial of St. Jerome, Doctor of the Church and translator of the Vulgate, Brother Joe Trout shares the surprising backstory behind one of the most important Bible translations in Christian history. Jerome fled to the desert as a monk – but the temptations of the world followed him. Fasting and ascetic practices weren't working. So, in desperation, he asked someone to teach him Hebrew.
What began as a way to occupy a restless mind became a gift to the whole Church.
In this short reflection, Brother Joe draws out a lesson for all of us who struggle with thoughts we wish we didn't have – lust, petty grievances, anxious rumination. Sometimes the answer isn't to rest, or even simply to pray or fast more. Sometimes the answer is to take up something hard and good, and let it renew your mind.
