Everything passes away. Vanity of vanities. So why does today still matter?
Welcome to A Word of Hope for Saturday of the 25th Week in Ordinary Time. Fr. Scott Steinkerchner reflects on another pairing of Qoheleth (Ecclesiastes) and Luke. The first is one of Qoheleth's most famous passages: "Rejoice, O young man, while you are young… Vanity of vanities, all things are vanity." The second is Jesus warning his disciples that the Son of Man will be handed over, a saying whose meaning "was hidden from them."
Right now, things are good for the apostles as they follow Jesus. But the day is coming when it will all fall apart. Fr. Scott's message is simple and freeing: this moment has its own blessings, and they won't always be here. Whether you're young or feel old in some way, today still has blessings for you. We can't hold on to them, but we can let them in and respond.
