We know almost nothing about the earthly life of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Apart from a few reverent Scripture passages and the tradition of "Mary's House" in Ephesus, her origins remain largely hidden from us. So why does the Church give us the long genealogy of Jesus on her feast day? In this homily for the Feast of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary (September 8), we reflect on how that "boring" list of names reveals something profound: Mary's birth was no accident. Generation after generation, saints and sinners alike, God wove a plan that culminated in the birth of the Mother of God. And the same is true for each of us. Our lives are part of God's story, we carry a heritage from the past, and we bear a responsibility for the future.
