Yesterday, we witnessed Jesus in glorious radiance—a moment of divine revelation and hope. But today, Jesus brings his disciples back to earth with a difficult truth: following him comes at a cost.
The message is clear: Don't get carried away by the glory. There will be suffering. There will be pain. There will be sacrifice.
Father Bouchard illustrates this with a deeply personal story. His cousin recently passed away, and his widow said something that captures the human experience: "I didn't know it was possible to miss somebody so much." We've all felt this—the loneliness of losing a dear friend, a spouse of many years, the ache of grief.
But Jesus goes even further. He's not just acknowledging the suffering that comes to us unbidden; he's calling us to willingly and intentionally sacrifice—to deny ourselves—as a preparation for glory. Our sinfulness and our self-centeredness prevent us from seeing Jesus as he truly is. Through suffering and self-denial, we purify ourselves and prepare our vision for the beatific vision.
The call is profound: Take whatever sorrow you carry today—grief, sadness about the world, loss—and offer it intentionally to the Lord. Make it part of your discipleship. In doing so, you prepare yourself to behold the fullness of the glory that awaits.
