We've all experienced that sudden flash of clarity—when confusion lifts and we suddenly know exactly what's true. Whether it's a difficult choice, a person's character, or a vocational calling, that moment of certainty changes everything. The disciples experience this on a supernatural level in the Transfiguration.
For months, they'd been uncertain about Jesus's true identity. Then, on the mountain, they witness Jesus transfigured in radiant light, flanked by Moses (representing the law) and Elijah (representing the prophets). These figures serve as divine witnesses, confirming: "Yes, this is really what you're seeing. This is the Lord."
But Father Bouchard invites us deeper: The Transfiguration teaches us two crucial lessons. First, we must recognize Jesus as both divine and human—God incarnate. Second, and equally important, we must develop spiritual discernment to recognize God's grace and presence unfolding everywhere around us.
While the disciples experienced a dramatic, undeniable sign, most of God's work in our world is far more subtle. As spiritual writer Annie Dillard said: "God's mercy and grace are unfolding in the world everywhere. The least we can do is pay attention."
