"Because We Know More" – The Good Samaritan Challenge Today

We all know the Parable of the Good Samaritan… or do we? In today's reflection, Brother Edward Van Merrienboer, coming to you from St. Vincent Ferrer Priory in River Forest, Illinois, invites us to look again at one of the most familiar passages in the Gospel (Luke 10:25-37) and ask whether it truly moves us to action. When a scholar of the law asks Jesus how to obtain eternal life, Jesus grounds the answer not in the distant future but in the present: a life captured by love of God and service to neighbor. And when the scholar presses further, "Who is my neighbor?", the answer is unmistakable: the one who helps the person in need. Brother Edward also shares a striking quote from Fr. Pedro Arrupe, former head of the Jesuits, who was asked why the Church had suddenly become so concerned about the poor. His answer: "Because we know more." In a world where news of suffering reaches us in seconds, that knowledge brings with it a responsibility to respond, within the capacity of our own lives. Most of us can't solve the world's great catastrophes. But every one of us can respond to the local ones: the hungry in our own country, children who need supplies for school, the neighbor right in front of us. Today we are called to be creative Samaritans. ⏱️ TIMESTAMPS 0:00 – Welcome to A Word of Hope 0:07 – Monday of the 27th Week in Ordinary Time 0:17 – Greetings from St. Vincent Ferrer Priory, River Forest, IL 0:24 – Today's Gospel: The Parable of the Good Samaritan 0:52 – The scholar's question: How do I obtain eternal life? 1:05 – Jesus' answer: Eternal life in the present 1:27 – "Who is my neighbor?" 1:42 – The needs of our world today 1:47 – Fr.
