Welcome to A Word of Hope for Monday, September 28th, Monday of the 26th Week in Ordinary Time. Our preacher today is Fr. Greg Heille, OP.
Today's first reading takes us to the opening chapter of the Book of Job. God says to the Satan, "Have you noticed my servant Job? There is no one on earth like him." The Satan replies: that's easy to say when Job has everything. Take it all away, and surely he will not remember you.
And so it happens. Job's oxen are carried off in a raid, lightning consumes his sheep, the Chaldeans seize his camels, and a windstorm takes the lives of his children. Yet Job falls prostrate before God and prays: "Naked I came forth from my mother's womb, and naked shall I go back again. The Lord gave, and the Lord has taken away. Blessed be the name of the Lord."
Life can be brutally unjust. It can take away the very things we treasure most. But even at its most brutal, God remains. Yesterday, Philippians called us to put on the attitude of Christ, who emptied himself. Today, we're called to put on the attitude of Job: nothing can separate us from the love of Jesus Christ.
