St. Boniface: Heroic Gladness in Daily Martyrdom

Join Father Andrew Carl Wisdom, OP, Novice Master for the Province of St. Albert the Great, for today's reflection on the remarkable life and death of St. Boniface, the great missionary and martyr.

St. Boniface's story mirrors that of Mother Teresa - in his mid-40s, he experienced a "call within a call." Leaving his monastery, he became a missionary, first to his Anglo-Saxon people, then to the Germans. Despite his success as a bishop and gifted administrator, his heart longed for evangelization. Near his 80th birthday, he convinced the Pope to let him resign and return to spreading the Gospel - which is when he was martyred.

But what's most remarkable are his final words to his companions as they faced death: "This now is that very day we've dreamed of, that moment of freedom we have yearned for is right here. So be heroic in the Lord, and suffer the royal grace of his will gladly. Keep your trust in him, and he will set your souls free."

Father Angel explores how Boniface's confident joy and hope-filled delight are not just for martyrs, but the engine of every Christian's spiritual life. These attitudes of gladness are the seedbed of devotion and heroic grace that help us face our daily "small martyrdoms" - those meaningful sacrifices at home, at the office, in our neighborhoods. When we trust the Lord through these daily dyings to self, we become delightfully free and ready for the larger sacrifices that come at unexpected hours.

Today's challenge: Trust in God's royal grace, knowing He knows what He's about in our lives, and be heroic in the Lord - not tomorrow, but today.
